Hawai‘i Data Collaborative at the 16th Hawai‘i Book & Music Festival

Nick Redding, Executive Director of the Hawai‘i Data Collaborative (HDC), was invited to join two panels at the 16th Annual Hawai‘i Book and Music Festival.

The first panel took place on October 5th, and included experts in healthcare, public health, and data to discuss Lessons for Future Pandemics.

Panelists included:

Providing a data perspective, Nick shared three lessons learned:

  1. Timely, Quality Data Matters – in its absence, we are not able to respond effectively to emerging and pressing challenges

  2. Data Connections Matter – data has broader utility beyond where it sits, and the extent to which we can connect through data can enable effective collective action

  3. Data Systems Matter – modernization of data systems while also developing the necessary supportive capabilities are critical

The second panel took place on October 28th, and included data experts to discuss Big Data Visualization.

Moderated by Chad Blair, Politics & Opinion Editor at Honolulu Civil Beat, each panelist presentation was followed by rich discussion and insight on several topics, including:

  • Challenges around an abundance of data versus insufficient data for decision making need

  • Building the organizational data capacities necessary to evaluate and translate data for decision making utility

  • The critical role leadership plays in mobilizing resources for better data

  • Maintaining the public’s appreciation for data generated as a result of the urgencies of the pandemic to address the chronic issues that continue to plague our state, and the enabling mechanisms needed to get us there.
